CONCEPT DESIGN

Early Concept Sketch for Admiral Park Guernsey (Workdone at Derek Lovejoy)

Perhaps better described as a ‘Vision’ the concept stage required two key elements, understanding and imagination. First you need to understand the site, the context, the history, both natural and cultural, the physical characteristics. Once you understand the essence of what makes the site what it is, then you must apply your imagination to uncover what it could be.

A concept cannot be purely aesthetic, it must be rooted in something more substantive, despite what they might want, landscape architects are not artists. A good concept is a balance between the context, the aesthetic and  the functional.

.

During the Concept Stage, we will work closely with clients, architects and to develop a vision, a blend of the aesthetic, functional and contextual. Defining what the projects should be. Experiencing the site in person is invaluable during this stage, the more time spent on site and in the surroundings the better the understanding.

The Concept is the foundation on which a project is built, only with a strong foundation can great things be built. We rely on the concept and throughout a project and use it to keep the design on track and to remember why we are where we are, and why we are doing what we are doing.
